HOMEBREW CARTRIDGES
Most retired home game systems are kept alive with continued software support
designed and programmed by its greatest fans. Usually the games are simplistic in
nature as it is very difficult and time consuming to make games. However, over time
they do become better. It will be very interesting to see just what direction the
NEO-GEO goes in once this barely tapped brew begins to fizzle out. Here are a few of
the crazy games that have surfaced so far.
Action Pac
This game was rumored to have possibly been an early prototype Pac-Man clone
from 1996. It was the subject of controversy when it was tossed up for auction back
around 1999. They originally asked for 2 or 3 thousand dollars for the game. But
despite having been offered almost double that amount, they never sold the game
and dropped out of sight. To this day we don't know if it was true. It is very
possible that this game was simply a complete fake and was part of an elaborate
hoax to try and rip off the neogeo community. Even if it was real, it would have
been a non-official "homebrew" title anyhow.
Digger Man
This unique game first surfaced back in 1999. It holds the honor of being
the first (and thus far only) RELEASED homebrew game for the Neo-Geo system.
It is CLEARLY a clone of the game Boulder Dash released back in 1984 by First
Star Software. Boulder Dash was released on several game & computer systems,
and was well received. The games main objective is to collect all the gems hidden
throughout the playfield while avoiding obstacles and enemies. The Neo-Geo version
also steals many sprites & sounds from Face's Gururin (an officially released game
in 1994), hence why rumors abounded in the beginning that it might be a long lost
official proto. This was proven to be false. However, the game can be readily found
for $100 - $200, so for those who may have fond memories of the gameplay and/or wish
to add it to their library of games, they can obtain it rather easily. Others may
want to pass. It does not appear to be "finished" and may not even have an ending
but maybe someday a more complete revision will surface.
Neo Sparks by Vektorlogic
Originally announced in the year 2000, this game was being developed and
scheduled to be released as the second homebrew Neo-Geo release. However, it has
been several years and nothing else seems to have ever been reported on it. It
may very well have been cancled. It is also possible that no work was ever done
on it in the first place, and the announcement of the game was merely a publicity
stunt by the distributor to gain some free advertizing. Recently, the same
distributor has made announcements for some more upcoming homebrew titles.
The first one, just released, is called Super Bubble Pop. A 3-dimensional
action/puzzle game.
